NASA Apollo-Soyuz Flown-Metal Commemorative Medallion
Capture the ultimate symbol of Cold War diplomacy and space exploration with this official NASA Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) Manned Flight Awareness Medallion. Minted in 1975, this rare piece of space history contains authentic, space-flown metal from both the American Apollo Command Module and the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.
These medallions were never sold directly to the general public; they were exclusively minted by NASA’s Manned Flight Awareness office and presented to a select group of engineers, technicians, and early NASA pioneers whose dedication made the historic 1975 joint mission a success.
As we all know my grandfather was a bit of a space hoarder and brought home allllllll the free swag from NASA including over 100 of these coins.
Key Features & Design Details
Genuine Flown Metal: The reverse of the coin bears the official inscription confirming its remarkable composition:
"This medallion contains metal from both Apollo and Soyuz that joined together in the first International manned space mission on July 15-24, 1975."
Dual-Language Inscriptions: Celebrating the iconic "Handshake in Space," the obverse features the names of the legendary crews in both English and Cyrillic script:
U.S. Crew: Stafford, Brand, Slayton (APOLLO)
Soviet Crew: Леонов (Leonov), Кубасов (Kubasov) (СОЮЗ / "COHO")
A True Collector’s Piece: Features a beautifully raised-relief rendering of the official Apollo-Soyuz mission patch, showcasing the two spacecraft docked together in Earth's orbit.
Diameter: 1.5 inches (Approx. 38mm) — a substantial, heavy-in-hand vintage metal token.
Historical Significance
In July 1975, at the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union launched a joint mission that would change the course of space exploration forever. When the Apollo and Soyuz capsules docked 140 miles above the Earth, Commander Tom Stafford and Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov shook hands through an open hatch. This medal is a physical artifact of that historic moment, containing the very metal that made the journey.
Perfect For:
Aerospace and NASA memorabilia collectors
Cold War and 20th-century history enthusiasts
A unique, high-value gift for space, sci-fi, and astronomy buffs
Condition Note: All are in fantastic collectors condition and came from my Grandfather’s estate (NASA employee on the mission) minor scratches and signs of age but really great condition nonetheless
